Less Is More: The Facebook Friends Cleanse

When I signed up for Facebook nearly seven years ago, I added everyone I knew. Friends were something to collect and the more you had, the cooler you appeared to be. Somewhere between Friend #1 and Friend #587 the novelty wore off, and when Jimmy Kimmel declared November 17th as National Unfriend Day, I jumped at the opportunity to trim my list. Four months later and 345 friends shorter (I'm down to 242!) I haven't regretted the decision yet.

How to do it? From your Home page (the first page you see after you login) click on Friends in the left-hand column, then click on "Edit Friends" at the top. Choose "All Friends" in the drop-down menu, and start x-ing away! Not sure who to ditch? Here are a few examples:

  1. You have no idea who they are, where you met, or why you're friends.
  2. The only interaction you have with them is declining their never-ending Farmville requests.
  3. They haven't changed their profile pic or posted an update in over a year.
  4. They've recently popped out a kid and the only stuff they post relates to what is going in or coming out of their bundle of joy.
  5. THEY WRITE THEIR STATUS UPDATES IN ALL CAPS WITH LOTS OF EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!

Would you ever do a "Friends Cleanse"? Who would you ditch? Who would you keep?
